Event Description

Some questions and an invitation

Contemporary experience of working is frequently stressful, noisy, inspected and interrupted.  Given this, what contributions can thoughtful writing, reading and conversations make to our respective projects?  Which aspects and emphases are changing, and which will endure?  During our time together, I will invite us to consider whether slower forms of writing and reading can enrich our private and public conversations and other practices.

Come and join us to share experiences of our often counter-intuitive, problematic and perhaps counter-cultural relationship with those time-honoured and frequently taken-for-granted forms of communication and discovery.

How might we engage?

In a digital age, the potential of dynamic and exploratory interrelationships between writing, reading and conversations is frequently overlooked.  This, to my mind, impoverishes personal, professional and organisational development.  Of course, writing in its various forms and formats has its benefits and limitations.  Nor is it a panacea: different people have different preferences or constraints affecting how they communicate, learn and develop  However, it seems to me that careful writing in particular often gets short shrift in this age of increasingly mobile and instant communication technologies and practices.

Drawing upon our own writing and reading histories, and  upon the conversations I've enjoyed over the years, for example within the AMED Writers' Group and in my role as commissioning editor of AMED's journal e-Organisations and People, I'll aim to facilitate moments of related discussion and writing.  I hope our interactions as critical friends will help to confirm or challenge my own and other peoples' current writing and reading assumptions and practices, and to consider future possibilities.

What to bring (Optional):  If you'd like to play a little, you could bring some technology of your choice for both manuscript and digital writing.

Afterwards, (also optional) we can cross over the road and continue our conversations in the AMED Writers' Group's local pub (The Ship).

Cost (payable on arrival):  £12 for full AMED Members; £15 for Networkers and Guests.  This nominal charge covers light refreshments and room hire.

Please note that we publicise AWG events on several platforms, so the RSVPs on this web page do not represent everyone who is coming!

Everyone is welcome (this event is not exclusive to regular members of the AMED Writers' Group), so please feel free to spread the word.

Plan your journey.

Please get in touch if you'd like to speak (or write!).   Best wishes. Bob bob@amed.org.uk

Just spending the afternoon writing my July Inspire coaching newsletter on the benefits of slowing down and came across Carl Honore's TED talk on the topic: http://www.ted.com/talks/carl_honore_praises_slowness

Don't be put off of his fast paced speach(!!) it is hard for people to fit into the 20 minute time slots of a TED talk. It is definitely worth sticking with it until the end.

Really looking forward to this - might get the slow train to London that day so I have more time to read and slow down!!
