Organized By: Bob MacKenzie
Latest Activity: Oct 15, 2021
Your invitation: Please join us in a lively, experimental, hybrid exploration (catering for both in-person and Zoom participation) through conversation and writing. We’ll explore Douglas’s intriguing approach to both the subject matter and writing of his latest book, ‘Elites’. How did this book come about, and why is it relevant to exploring power ‘safely’? What does it tell us about the power of writing?
A little about ‘Elites’: ‘Elites: … is as much a work of social philosophy as it is a business book — an examination of meritocracy, meaning and the “magic tricks” by which a small group sustains itself at the pinnacle of society …. Listen to a four-minute overview with Douglas here: www.tinyurl.com/Elites-AT1.
About our process: On Thursday, we’ll send a short extract as a trigger to help you to experiment during our session with writing in the third person about an intense first-person experience, drawing upon Douglas’s learning as both a fiction and non-fiction writer. And we’ll send a Zoom link for those joining us online. We’ll open the online meeting between 2-4 pm, as we feel that 2 hours is quite long enough for anyone to concentrate on a screen. For in-person participants, we’ll start at 1.30 pm to warm up, and end at 4.30 pm, after a winding down. We hope you’ll bear with us in this experiment.
About Douglas: Born in Hong Kong, in 2010 Douglas completed a doctorate in management at the University of Hertfordshire. He has a first class honours degree from Cambridge and a master’s from Harvard, and more than 12 years’ experience as an executive coach specialising in careers, top level leadership and power and politics in organisations. ‘Elites' is his fifth book on leadership. For more about Douglas, click here; for more about his writing, click here.
How to reserve your place: Cost: (In-person: £15) at Roots and Shoots, London. To pay, please click here. (Via Zoom: free - though a voluntary donation here is welcome, to help cover the cost of room hire :)). In-person, for everyone’s comfort and safety, we'll limit the number of participants to 12.
Please reply to Bob @ bob@amed.org.uk with your preferred participation option by 11 am on Friday 15 October (earlier if possible). We’ll then send you anything else you need in time for you to join.
