Event Description

The unread story is not a story ... The reader, reading it, makes it live: a live thing, a story. Ursula K. Le Guin, Dancing at the Edge of the World: Thoughts on Words, Women, Places

‘A story only matters, I suspect, to the extent that the people in the story change.’ Neil Gaiman, The Ocean at the End of the Lane

There's always a story. It's all stories, really. The sun coming up every day is a story. Everything's got a story in it. Change the story, change the world. Terry Pratchett, A Hat Full of Sky

Your Invitation: Please join us for a co-inquiry into the power of story in our writing and conversations.  This is an open session, and everyone is welcome, whether or not you’re an AMED Member.

Trevor writes: “Please join me to explore, through writing and conversations, how to turn our communications into stories that capture the imagination of our readers, inviting them to reflect, change and take action.

Our lives are built from stories, which give our experience meaning. When it comes to written communications – whether emails, letters, reports, articles, grant proposals, webpages, books or academic papers – our impact strengthens through knowledge of form and function in stories.

Our process:  Drawing upon ideas such as ’The Hero’s Journey’, voice and protagonist, we will explore in a light-hearted way – through discussion and practical activities – how we can engage more powerfully with our readers. Please feel free to bring along your ideas or work-in-progress for a project or communication in whatever medium or context and see how they can be or have been transformed by considering the power of story”.

About your facilitator: Trevor is a writer, writing facilitator and writing development researcher. He is convinced that we can all write more powerfully, given the right nudges, and no matter what context we’re working in. Author or co-writer of more than 40 books in several non-fiction genres, plus numerous academic papers and newspaper and magazine articles, Trevor works with universities and is Director of Royal Literary Fund Consultant Fellows. This programme trains professional writers, from novelists to newspaper editors, to facilitate writing workshops and other learning interventions in universities. Trevor’s latest books are Success in Academic Writing (2nd ed, Palgrave Macmillan, 2018) for university students and staff, and Sardine (Reaktion Books, 2018) for those concerned about nature and our place within it.  E:  trevorday@ndirect.co.uk
