Event Description

Your invitation:   Are you incubating ideas, images, poems or stories in any medium at any stage of their development? Would you like to explore them further in a safe and trusted space?  If so, you’re welcome to join us in this open, interactive, free session of the AMED Writers’ Group.  We’ll simply begin by sharing briefly with each other a little of what’s currently on our minds, however half-formed and tentative.  Then we’ll spend equal time in smaller, supportive groups, voicing our respective interests and hearing how they land with a few generous others.  After a pause for refreshment, we’ll each have an opportunity if we wish to share in the larger group any insights and energies that have emerged.

Who might come?  This session could be of interest to a diverse range of creative and curious people.  You could be considering making a contribution in a variety of capacities to either of the 2021 (or subsequent) editions of AMED’s journal e-Organisations and People, or to any other forum you might choose for expressing your ideas.  You could be approaching your creative project from the perspective of an artist, reader, author, poet, editor, creator of a video or podcast, reader, or listener/critical friend.  Collective and individual agendas will emerge through conversations, and possibly through occasional moments of writing.  Be prepared for anything!

Some ideas about critical friendship:  In case it helps, we’re embedding a short 20-minute video conversation between Steve Dilworth and me that explores some essential ideas about critical friendships for writing, conversations and creativity.

We wanted to share this recording with you, hoping it would give you a sense of how you could perhaps make use of critical friends to support you in your projects.

Here's a list of questions and topics we cover in the video, to help you decide if you want to watch the video from start to finish or if it would better suit your current mood (or pandemic-induced attention span) to hop around a bit.

  • What is 'critical friendship' and why is it 'critical'?
  • The relationship between producing work and talking about it
  • Who should be a critical friend?
  • Is it a hierarchical relationship?
  • Connecting with your critical friends

About Bob:  I am commissioning editor of AMED's online journal e-Organisations and People.  I believe that everyone dreams of telling a good story, and that it can help to talk about those dreams occasionally in good company.

How to express an interest in joining us:  If you are interested in joining us, please let me know by close of play 14 April (earlier if possible), and I’ll then send you the Zoom link on 15 April.  Please feel free to spread the word, and don't hesitate to contact me if you'd like to discuss anything before making up your mind.

Very best wishes.  Bob bob@amed.org.uk.
