Engaging with reviewing, with Ruth Slater (via Zoom)

Your invitation: Please join our free AMED Writers’ Group session via Zoom on Friday 22 April to explore aspects of engaging with reading or writing reviews (of any description) more readily.  Please bring with you a book, poem, information about a film or other performance, or an artifact or image that sparks your imagination.

Our process:  After introductions and scene-setting, we’ll consider how reviewing is another way to overcome any blocks we might have, and approach engaging with reviews as a way of giving back, and as a method of autobiographical writing.  We’ll explore our experiences of reviewing, including why we do so (e.g. motives and benefits), and what we chose to review.

We’ll then examine our chosen review, framing it with some autobiographical detail about the topic of the review – relating this to any writing, book/poem, and to the circumstances in which you discovered it.  You’ll have a chance to sketch a brief synopsis of the writing or of a description of the item, comment on the style, suggest to whom it might appeal, remark on Its contemporary resonance (if any), and say whether or not you’d recommend it to others, and why.

We’ll do all this through interaction – a mix of free writing about the items you have brought, and by discussion in pairs and plenary.

About Ruth: 

Dr Ruth Slater is an independent academic.  Formerly senior lecturer and course leader in HRM at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), Ruth is now affiliated to several UK institutions, including Solent, Stirling Universities and UCLan, where she continues teaching and research.  Over the last few years, Ruth has been reviewing books for academic journals and engaging in the peer review process for the Academy of Management and British Academy of Management conferences.  During these processes of reviewing, Ruth has discovered not only that reviewing is an important activity for academic rigour, but that at the personal level it is a form of expression in which, in some circumstances, it is possible to call to mind particular aspects of a life and is, therefore, a vehicle for autobiography.  Contact: ruthslater9@me.com.  ORCiD :  0000-0003-0302-5919
