Event Description

...'with a pencil, you can redraw the world'  (Kate Raworth: 'Doughnut Economics')

Your invitation to AMED’s annual visit to the seaside.  Enjoy creative conversations. Reflect. Savour some quiet personal writing and reading time. Meet old and new friends. Experiment, share, practice, make discoveries. Celebrate   each other’s talents.  Have some fun during the Brighton Festival. Leave with renewed energy and creativity.

Plus ça change …?

In a digital age, the potential of dynamic and exploratory interrelationships between writing, reading and conversations is frequently overlooked, to the impoverishment of personal, professional, organisational and global development. What can we do about this?  Let's explore how to enrich our private and public communication practices. This workshop is a follow-up to a project initiated in June 2015.

How might we engage?

Depending on context, each form and format of communication has its benefits and limitations, and writing is not a panacea: different people communicate, learn and develop differently.  However, thoughtful approaches to  writing and reading in particular often get short shrift in this age of increasingly mobile and instant communication technologies and practices.

Today, we'll draw upon our respective writing and reading histories, and take advantage of the reflective spaces available to us in and around the Brighton Friends Meeting House (BFMH).  We'll enjoy moments of related discussion, reading and writing, shifting across a faster/slower spectrum.  As critical friends we'll confirm or challenge our respective writing and reading assumptions and practices, and consider future possibilities. We’ll each have plenty of opportunity to pay attention to our own current writing and reading enthusiasms and projects.  Where appropriate, we’ll also draw upon experiences of producing and contributing to AMED’s journal.

What to bring:  Please bring some writing and reading technology of your choice - both manuscript and digital if possible.  Also, please come prepared to share your ideas for, or examples of, a writing or reading project that you’re working on or considering.

Afterwards (optional) we can continue our conversations informally in a pub or coffee shop in the nearby La(i)nes.

Cost (payable via the AMED Office here:  £25 for full AMED Members; £30 for Networkers and Guests.  This includes light refreshments.  You can bring your own packed lunch, or choose from one of the many quirky eating places in the nearby La(i)nes.

Everyone is welcome, so please feel free to spread the word.
