a third eye for conversation dynamics

Dame Sally Davies, the UK’s Chief Medical Officer, interviewed on BBC Radio Four’s ‘The Life Scientific’ on 4 Nov 2014 re a difficult period when she was trying to shift the way research money was allocated in the NHS and she was encountering resistance. “I went to my boss and said ‘We have three choices – I leave, I burn out or you train me.’ .. So I went to INSEAD and did a .. course on emotional intelligence … which made me realise I had to have .. this third eye to watch the dynamic of the conversations and what was going on. And then I began to practise.”
I resonated with this and thought about SAVI®, the System for Analyszing Verbal Interaction, http://savicommunications.com/SAVI_grid.html ; which helps us see the dynamics we co-create and helps make sense of why some conversations are satisfying and others not. It also gives us strategies to experiment with to shift dissatisfying conversations.
