Calendar of meeting dates (please put them in your diary now!) 

It’s business as usual for the rest of 2008.   Our meetings are all scheduled to take place on the following dates in the Cadbury Room, the Penn Club, from 1230 for 1300 hours until 1630 hours.

  • Friday 15 February
  • Friday 18 April
  • Friday 13 June
  • Friday 15 August
  • Friday 17 October
  • Friday 19 December.

Broadcasting the word 

If you are interested in joining us on any of those occasions, please put these dates in your diary, tell your friends and colleagues about our plans, and let them know that they would be made very welcome.    However tentative is your interest in writing, I’m sure that you’ll find something in our meetings for you, and that you’ll almost certainly have something to offer other people.  

Watch out for further notices in the AMED e-Bulletin, and on our website.   Meantime, best wishes for your writing.

Following the successful 25 April Joint Writing Workshop on ‘Inspiring Writing’, the next meeting of the AMED Writers’ Group centres on a highly creative and participatory workshop facilitated by Tony Page.   Tony is co-author of a book, hot off the press, called ‘From Hippos to Gazelles:   How Leaders Create Leaders’, and has also written ‘Diary of a Change Agent’.   I’ve attached a copy of the flyer for Tony’s new book, which will provide the essence of our workshop. 

How the meeting might work 

Depending on numbers, and subject to negotiation, the process is likely to be broadly as follows: 

1230 – Lunch in the Dining Room (bring your own; tea, coffee and water are available on tap)

1300 -  Welcome and catch-up in the Cadbury Room (Bob)

1330 -  Scene-setting (Tony)

1350 -  We read and comment briefly on the Fable

1400  - We disperse to reflect singly or in pairs on our own individual experiences of the 5 phases recounted in the fable, and write a few sentences about our personal experiences of a particular phase that resonates with us.

1500  - Open dialogue and opportunities for feedback

1600  - AOB and broader issues for the AWG (Bob)

1630  - CLOSE.

Cost 

The cost of the venue is £75, which we will share equally simply by dividing that amount by the number of participants.   Depending on how many sign up to come, I reckon that the cost per head should be no more than £7.50 - £10.   It might even be less!

AWG Member Irene MacWilliam has provided information about Lapidus, which is an organisation dedicated to the use of writing for personal development. Context  

Our shared interests in the role of writing in personal and organisational development were furthered through a joint inquiry/workshop on ‘Inspiring Writing’ at the St Alban’s Centre, London, on Friday 25 April.   Our inquiry questions flowed from a desire to share our experiences of and experiments in using writing to breathe life into organisational learning and change.   Irene MacWilliam coordinated the efforts of the small Workshop planning team.   Two preceding milestones in this project are a Joint Writing Workshop in June 2007 on ‘Striking Moments - putting our practice into writing’, and the publication of a special themed issue of the AMED journal Organisations and People (O&P) (Vol 15:1) on ‘Writing in Leadership and Change’ in February 2008. 

Process 

It’s impossible – and possibly inappropriate – to attempt to indicate the sheer range and intensity of the conversations and activities that took place on 25 April.   Although we had imagined a loose framework, we were fully prepared to follow an emergent agenda. This flexibility contributed to a fascinating series of conversations variously involving 14 people in a large circle, around the lunch table, and in smaller groups. Individual participants will tell their own stories about what they experienced.   This note sends out the common message that we are inspired to continue these conversations in as many ways as possible.   Anyone who could not be present on 25 April, and who shares our interests in writing, is welcome to join us, or to start their own conversations within their own networks.

 Keeping our conversations going 

Our proposals for keeping these conversations going include: 

  1. Engaging informally offline in 1:1 contact and small clusters
  2. Participating in online discussions about writing via AMED Dialogue (see http://amed08.ning.com/?)
  3. Offering to lead occasional sessions on writing for ODiN – the OD Innovation Network (see http://www.informalcoalitions.typepad.com/odin/)
  4. Planning another collaborative writing workshop/joint inquiry involving overlapping networks rippling outwards from ODiN, the Change Alliance and the AMED Writers’ Group in 9-12 months time.   This will be an opportunity for us not to lose sight of the articles that appeared in the February 2008 issue of O&P, which we didn’t have time to explore in any detail on 25 April.   Amer Jerby and Alison Donaldson have already offered to be part of the next planning team for this.   If you would also like to volunteer to help organise this event, please let us know.
  5. Vicky Cosstick and Bob MacKenzie are approaching various publishers to explore the possibility of publishing a book about our emerging ideas and practices for writing in personal and organizational development.
  6. Individual authors of the February 2008 O&P will take the initiative to convene sessions with invited critical friends and readers to discuss their article.   Vicky Cosstick is the first to have made this offer, and will be sending out an invitation in due course.
  7. Participating in bi-monthly AMED Writers’ Group (AWG) meetings (see http://www.amed.org.uk/networks/AMED%20Writers%20Group.pdf).   The next AWG meeting is on Friday 13 June, and everyone is welcome.
