Acknowledging Human ComplexityAMED speaks for the developer, the maverick in the human resources team whose aim is to release the full potential of every, unique person. Our values can seem to be at odds with those whose responsibility is to favour no one and to treat all by the same, fair procedures. Grades and job specs, appraisals and the pursuit of objectivity can somehow obscure our wonderful, complex, distinctive individuality. When our complexity is obscured or ignored, when reality is oversimplified to make it manageable, in fact we make it impossible to manage. Have you ever been troubled that the benefits of a commonsense new policy didn’t seem to materialise or wondered why it feels so difficult to make something simple happen? Don’t you wish there was someone with whom you could speak about it? Contact the AMED Office (01480 459 575), connect with your local AMED Coordinator, make this discussion happen, and tell David McAra (44 (0) 7917 689344) how it went… Organisational Change in Aberdeen Well, consider this warm invitation from Karen Duncan, AMED co-ordinator in Aberdeen, to an evening on change: “Recently I’ve experienced a transition from a traditional office environment to working from home. This brought about some unusual emotions: excitement, fear, dread and too many more to list. As I work with many organisations in a constant state of change it got me thinking about whether or not we can really manage it and all it’s associated ‘baggage’ for ourselves that smoothly. Looking back at the familiar model of Lewin and the steps of Fisher’s Process of Transition got me thinking about whether or not it is truly possible to manage change and take people with you on the journey. So this is what we will be exploring during the evening. Please bring your personal and professional experiences to share with the group.” Want to come? Unfortunately, you’ve missed it. But ask Karen about the next one: (KarenL.Duncan@mercia-scotland.co.uk) or perhaps you’ll have to start your own local group. Maybe we can help. If you want to set up a local group, you may like to contact: David McAra (01224 735101, david.mcara@petrotechnics.com) or Terry Gibson (01425 673047, terry.gibson@virgin.net) if you’ve any questions or would like to chat about the experience of coordinating groups. Concepta Wayment or Debbie Florence in the AMED Office (amedoffice@amed.org.uk) for a list of potentially interested people in your area.
